Just came back from a fall hiking trip in Maine. Weather was cool (40-60 F) and these were WONDERFUL. I wore them on a 4-day backpacking trip almost constantly. One chilly night, I even wore them to bed under my long underwear/PJ's! These are GREAT and very convenient for hiking, much better than zip pants (which used to be my mainstay). Here's what I did: I wore shorts and these "kneekers." When it was chilly in the morning, or perhaps during a mid-day stop when we cooled down, I had them "up." When I got hot (which happened after a few minutes of walking uphill with a full backpack), I pushed them down to the top of my boots. I have a merino wool LS thin top, purchased in New Zealand (where these sheep are raised), and I love that top, too - always soft, not itchy, warm (but not hot), not smelly even with extended wear, and comfortable. These "kneekers" are also part merino wool, I see. So there must be something special about the wool from that breed of sheep. As mentioned, zip pants used to be my mainstay. However, taking the bottoms off and on are not convenient when hiking, because I must sit down, remove my boots, zip the bottoms on or off, and then put my boots back on again. These "kneekers" work SO much better - pull up when chilly, push down to the top of the boots when hot. This is the first time I'm bothering to write a review for Amazon. But I found this product to be so comfy and to work so well, that I had to say something about how well they work for hiking. The price is reasonable and although I may have looked a little odd wearing them with slippers in the evening (as mentioned, I almost never took them off!), perhaps it will be a new outdoorsy "look." One caveat: as one reviewer mentioned, these are held up by something stretchy and may be uncomfortable for someone with really thick, muscular thighs. Also, I've only worn these once (but for 7 days straight!). Just put them through the washing machine and they seem to have come out fine (like my wool socks, I hung them to dry), but I don't know how they hold up long-term and with repeated washings.
